Almond Flowers

pencils and pastels on Strathmore 400 Series paper
9" x 12" (22.9 cm x 30.5 cm)
I know it's not spring and I do like all weather in Greece but I could also use some early spring right now. Snow or spring. Spring is never enough. ;)

Balls on the Christmas tree.  I like how the orange and the gold shine on the greenery. :)

Ms Chick and her company in Greece!

oil on canvas
10" x 12" (25 x 30 cm)

Some weeks ago the well-known Ms Chick (traveling chicken - http://travel-chicken.blogspot.com/) came to visit me in Greece. It was a wonderful experience going around at the beach, the park, the city all together. My cat Merlin was a bit jealous but he managed to stay calm. Ms Chick was happy to find out that I am a vegan and she was not in danger here, at least with me. This painting is from a rest we took after a big walk. They are all discussing their experience here on a wooden seat at the city park of Katerini.

Bird in green

This is a commission bird for a lady who really loves them.  She has birds in all her house but none of them is alive and in a cage.  This means she really loves them and wants them free keeping their images and statues all around.

Diving in blue

oil on canvas
6,4" x 6,4" (16 x 16 cm)

I wanted to do something different this time - well, not very different but different.  It's a micro of a blue flower.  It's a bit centered but not too much to disobey art rules.  Blue is not a very common color for flowers and when I saw it, I surely put it in the to do list. :)

Beetle on white

oil on canvas side-painted
9,6" x 12" (24 x 30 cm)

An other bug, a beetle this time.  I am getting bigger and bigger fan of these wonderful creatures and their tiny but powerful world.  We don't usually bother ourselves with them, they go unnoticed and seem unimportant but without their contribution life on earth would be impossible.  This guy above is a mighty giant in his own world.  I was recently watching a documentary about the world of insects and it's amazing how complicated and busy lives they live. Focusing on micros I feel I opened a gate to an other world or jumped into the rabbit's hole with Alice.
The reference photo belongs to Lisa Martin, thank you Lisa!

I am looking at you

8 1/4" x 11 3/4" (21 x 29.7 cm)
pastel and charcoal pencils on Fabriano 200 gr paper

I've had this photo for a long time found somewhere in the internet, I really want to thank the unknown (to me) photographer.  Some days ago my eye fell onto it and I felt I wanted to do it.  Nature is sacred to me, all the animals that are close to extinction because of humanity's lifestyles are also sacred and I am on my own small personal path to help in some way every time I can.  The way this cheetah looks at someone or something at the other side made me think that this could be me or some other human trying to excuse the unexcusable.  I love the result and I hope I've justified this wonderful wild creature.

Buckeye butterfly

oil on canvas side-painted
12" x 8" (30 x 20 cm)

Yes, an other butterfly, this is a buckeye one and I liked the way it covers the painting and it fits with the rest of nature.  I wonder if this is a spring or a summer painting, in the end.
The reference photo belongs to Rodney Campbell

Tiger Swallowtail butterfly

pastels on 160gr Fabriano acid free black paper
9" x 12" (23 x 30,5 cm)

Out of comfort zone.  The first pastel after a long long time.  I feel excited finding myself in this medium again.  Butterflies symbolize regeneration and the constant change which is the real one law of the universe. Maybe I need some change in my quite stressful latest period of time and maybe I need her help to achieve it along with a new more revolutionary state of mind.  This specific butterfly is not justified by the photo since greens and yellows seem so better from close.  Have a great August time!
The photographer who inspired this one is K. Brooks.

Climbing the petal

oil on canvas
8" x 8" (20 x 20 cm)

This is a night painting and I did it half-sleepy before I rest for an early awakening.  But this lady wanted to climb the petal and we struggled together to reach our goals: her petal top, my warm bed.

The rose of many colors

oil on canvas
9,6" x 7,2" (18 x 24 cm)

Some paintings just don't want to get painted, this one was one of them.  Some times I was wondering if the universe didn't want me to finish it and some others that the rose was too selfish and demanding.  But, in the end, I think that both of us, the rose and me, were happy with my insistency to finish the race no matter what.
The reference is from the beautiful photo of Suzanne Wallick.

The new yellow

oil on canvas painted all around
10" x 12" (25 x 30 cm)

This is much bigger than the ones I do lately and it took me some time.  It's a micro of a yellow rose with a bug.  It's a painting I was waiting to do and it is going to enter a micro competition.
It's based on a photo of Chuck Krejcsi with my colors and way of seeing.

The White Butterfly

oil on canvas painted around
8" x 8" (20 x 20 cm)

This is my first butterfly and it's a white one.  I mostly like the green and white shades around the butterfly. Entering this microcosm still gives me a lot of pleasure like sneaking in their lives but so far no bug complained.
The image is from a copyright free photo of Kathryn Smith.

Flying Lady

oil on canvas
8" x 8" (20 x 20 cm)

Yes, an other lady bug.  It's my first flying one.  I had this photo for a long time and I saw it a couple of days ago.  In some way it attracted me with its warmth and I just had to do it.  Go go lady, this is what I call freedom!

Ms Chick will visit me soon!

Some week ago I discovered - through Cathleen Rehfeld's beautiful painting at dailypaintworks.com - the traveling chicken.  I was amazed with the idea and I immediately made my application.  And how lucky can I be?  From more than 30 artists who patiently wait for Ms Chick in the waiting list, I jumped to the fifth place because she will come to Europe and as a european artist I will have the privilege to host her much earlier than others.
I will definitely tell you when she will come since I will also paint her and share my painting with all the other artists who have already done so and the artists who will do so after my turn.
Please check who the traveling chicken is and what's going on.  I am sure it's the most globe-trotting chicken of the planet. :P

The spiral of life

oil on canvas
8" x 8" (20 x 20 cm)

I wanted to do something simple after my last painting that took me some time.  But in the end it came up so well that now it's one of my favourite ever.
I created it from a photo of Sonia Mckinlay

Rhododendron flower

oil on canvas - the subject continues all around
8" x 12" (20 x 30 cm)

This is a close up of the flower of rhododendron. An other close up for my nature micro collection. This specific painting took me more time than I expected, I wanted to feel well with each part of it and I now do feel well with it.
It is my interpretation of a photo of Nicola B. from PaintMyPhoto site.

Lady bug on leaf

oil on canvas on wood
6" x 6" (15 x 15 cm) canvas on 10" x 10" (25 x 25 cm) wood

An other lady bug on leaf.  I've left part of the wood unpainted to show off the main part of the forest the lady lives in.  And because otherwise it wouldn't have a difference if it was painted on any medium. The painting is a bit heavy because of the wood and it doesn't need a frame.
From the photo of Sonia Mckinlay from PaintMyPhoto site.

Rose close up

8" x 8" (20 x 20 cm)
oil on canvas

I am preparing a personal exhibition for October. The subject is "micro in nature" and from now on I am going to post a lot of micro nature small paintings.  This is the first one.  I am fascinated by nature, especially in her micro and macro form and my decision to chose this subject makes me really happy.
This paintings is from a copyright free photo of Nicola B. I thank all my wonderful friends in PMP.

"Butterfly light" is a commission I recently finished.  It's also a way to say thanks to spring, I am so grateful that sun came back, I had missed him so much during winter and I need to paint nature as much as I can.

This painting is based on a copyright free photo of Dave Smith aka Pixelbloke, a great photographer who passed away last year.  When I decided to make a painting from his photos, this little guy caught my attention.  Maybe because I love birds.

Spring

oil on canvas painted all around
9.6" x 7.2" (24 x 18 cm)

This is from a copyright free photo of the paintmyphoto site that I knew I wanted to paint from the first moment.  It's spring now and the flowers open their petals, the warmth of the sun awakes nature and the air is full of bees and bugs humming and dancing their usual dance of life. I had to participate in a way. :)

Power of sprout

20 x 25 cm (8" x 10")
oil on canvas panel

It's the first sprout that starts everything. Every beginning with its difficulty at start, the struggle and the force, the pain and the awe of the new way of seeing. Hesitatingly and magnifically, every next step is smoother and easier.

Rose bud

Life adventure is pretty strange: we come and go, come and go, come and go... and come and go again.  It wouldn't have a meaning if these walks weren't the classes of a strange also school.
This and the next two small paintings have to do with a rose in its various ages.  Here it has just come and it's a bud, full of joy and excitement, ready to conquer and/or save the world.

The Rose

This is the second rose - beautiful and independent, passionate but also stabilized, walking the way of the clever rose - hoping and wandering also.  It knows that it doesn't know a lot of things, worries about life's troubles but still has time for fun and a cup of tea (organic one!)...

Wise rose

It is wise, experienced and a beauty by its own right.  It understood a lot of life's lessons and now knows that real knowledge is beyond this plane, so it is almost ready to skip it from here soon.  But this doesn't make it sad, at least not much, since it knows that the road goes on beyond the shaking of its petals and beyond the white light, there, to the land of the energy, where it will keep searching for miracles and adventures.

Sudoku

I just love this painting.  At the photos above I show the edges around of which I am really proud of.  It's not that they are just painted, they just look so gorgeous from near that these photos cannot show it enough.
The painting at front is like this:

...and with the wooden frame that lets the painting show itself all around, it's like this:

The distance between the painting and the frame lets the edges be shown clearly and nicely.  I am just so proud of that small flower at the center and above that someone can see only in three dimensions but I can't explain the why scientifically.  Maybe in an other lifetime...
